American Academy of Optometry

http://www.aaopt.org

Founded in 1922, the American Academy of Optometry is committed to promoting the art and science of vision care through lifelong learning.

The optometry field is constantly changing. To provide the highest quality continuing education and the most current vision science research, the Academy's annual meeting includes nearly 300 hours of Lectures & Workshops, symposia, and scientific lecture and poster presentations over 4 days. And, besides all that, the Academy is FUN!

The letters "FAAO" (Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry) after an optometrist, scientist or other qualified person’s name signify to colleagues and patients that rigorous qualifications for Fellowship have been met.

Academy membership consists of Fellows (including Emeritus, Honorary and Life Fellows), student members, and candidates for Fellowship. Although members may have similar benefits, only Fellows may use the "FAAO" designation.

Currently 86% of Academy Fellows provide clinical care (see patients on a continuing basis).

47% are in private practice.

14% are involved in the education of optometric students.

11% practice optometry through the federal service (military, Department of Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Services, Public Health Service, etc.).

All members of the Academy, whether or not they see patients, are dedicated to the highest standards of optometric practice through clinical care, education or research.

Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (ACBO)

The Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (ACBO) provides education and training in developmental optometry - a whole-body approach to vision.

The Australasian College of Behavioural Optometrists (ACBO) was founded in 1987, and provides Australian, New Zealand and Asian optometrists with education and training in behavioural optometry. Our members have a special interest in children's vision, patients with learning difficulties, traumatic brain injury, binocular vision dysfunction, as well as those wishing to enhance their visual skills for sport.

British Association of Behavioural Optometrists (BABO-UK)

http://babo.co.uk

BABO, 1 Bergamot Drive,

Meir Park, Stoke-on-Trent,

ST3 7FD

The British Association of Behavioural Optometrists is a network of highly qualified and motivated Optometrists, with a specialist interest in how vision affects human performance. Vision and the motor visual system are our primary source for gathering information with 87% of learning occurring through the visual system. Even subtle issues with the visual system can have a major impact on our efficiency and performance, even more so for children where these systems are still developing.

Behavioural Optometrists will explore these processes and use a range of treatments to help their patients learn and function more efficiently.

This can be applicable to any age group‚ not just to children, and can also be of direct benefit to those following accidents and with possible traumatic brain injury.

With further learning and experience BABO members can follow the Certification Programme leading to BABO Fellowship which they can complete in a two or four year cycle. Behavioural or functional optometry is now well established in the UK, being introduced by Keith Holland, a British optometrist, in 1990.

College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD)

- - -

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) is a non-profit, international membership association of eye care professionals including optometrists, optometry students, and vision therapists. Established in 1971, COVD provides board certification for eye doctors and vision therapists who are prepared to offer state-of-the-art services in:

Behavioral and developmental vision care

Vision therapy

Visual rehabilitation

These specialized vision care services develop and enhance visual abilities and correct many vision problems in infants, children, and adults.

Our Mission

Improving lives by advancing excellence in optometric vision therapy and rehabilitation through education and board certification.

Our Vision

To drive progress through clinical excellence and research in developmental vision care, optometric vision therapy, and rehabilitation. This will result in wider adoption of optometric vision therapy and increased recognition of its integral role in enhancing learning, productivity, and overall quality of life.

The COVD International Examination and Certification Board process includes a rigorous evaluation of the eye care professional's knowledge and abilities in providing developmental and behavioral vision care for patients. Optometrists who successfully complete their certification process are Board Certified in Vision Development and Vision Therapy and are designated Fellows of COVD (FCOVD). Vision therapists are certified to work with COVD Fellows as Certified Optometric Vision Therapists (COVT).

College of Syntonics in Optometry (CSO)

The College of Syntonic Optometry is an active and growing post-graduate educational organization with branches in Australia, Europe, Mexico, and Great Britain. Established in 1933, its members include optometrists and other health professionals and supporters from around the world. Those who achieve a clinical level of experience and mastery are awarded the status of Fellow.

The annual CONFERENCE ON LIGHT AND VISION features basic and advanced courses in syntonic phototherapy as well as presentations by scientists and clinicians from related fields.

It publishes THE JOURNAL OF OPTOMETRIC PHOTOTHERAPY as well as periodic newsletter updates and this website and others.

Today, scientific as well as clinical verification of light’s impact on health and healing and a growing public demand for functional and rehabilitative vision therapy continue to vitalize the college and advance its mission

What is Syntonics?

Syntonics or optometric phototherapy, is the branch of ocular science dealing with the application of selected light frequencies through the eyes. It has been used clinically for over 70 years in the field of optometry with continued success in the treatment of visual dysfunctions, including strabismus (eye turns), amblyopia (lazy eye), focusing and convergence problems, learning disorders, and the aftereffects of stress and trauma. In recent years, Syntonics has been shown to be effective in the treatment of brain injuries and emotional disorders.

Light is essential to life. Our planet revolves around the sun and all life on earth is sustained by sunlight. The Greeks were the first to document the use of phototherapy. Currently light is used on a variety of disorders from the "bili" lights used on jaundiced newborns to the more recent psychiatric use of white light for treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In optometry the use of phototherapy to treat visual dysfunctions is called Syntonics.

Interest in the effect of light on the body intensified earlier this century. Most of the current therapeutic techniques used in syntonics are based on the work done by Dr. Harry Riley Spitler in the 1920s and 1930s. Dr. Spitler, who had both optometric and medical degrees, began researching and using phototherapy in 1909. Spitler, the author of "The Syntonic Principle", conceived the principles for a new science that he called "Syntonics". Syntonics, from the word syntony (to bring into balance), refers physiologically to a balanced, integrated nervous system.

Certain biochemical conditions in the brain need to be present before effective cortical plasticity and new functions can occur. Neurotransmitters trigger this biochemistry and allow for additional synoptic connections to initiate movement and growth in new directions. Colored light therapy can act as a powerful tool to stimulate the biochemistry of the brain through the visual system by way of the retinal-hypothalmus brain connection.
